Virtual Regatta launches the IMOCA VIRTUAL SERIES Championship by CORUM L’Épargne

A real-virtual parallel championship: a world first!

As the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES resume on May 8th with the start of the Guyader Bermuda 1000 Race in Brest, Virtual Regatta is launching the world’s first virtual championship dedicated to ocean racing and more specifically to IMOCA boats: the IMOCA VIRTUAL SERIES by CORUM L’Épargne. This series of virtual events will allow players to compete in the same races as real skippers. Good news: nearly ten virtual races will be created between now and the Vendée Globe 2024.

This will be an opportunity for the IMOCA class to crown a real and a virtual champion each year!

The IMOCA GLOBE SERIES, the great offshore soap opera

Inaugurated in 2018, the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES is the result of the common desire of skippers and race organisers to create an ever stronger link between the various events. In order to contribute to the growing attractiveness of the famous 60-foot monohull class, this Championship now brings together the greatest offshore races with more and more events 100% dedicated to IMOCA.

The IMOCA GLOBE SERIES will increase the number of races on the calendar – four in 2022, 18 in total between 2021 and 2024 – allowing the teams to improve their reliability and performance, while competing on a more regular basis. The public benefits from a great soap opera to follow between two Vendée Globes! At the end of each season, the title of IMOCA Champion is awarded to the most consistent skipper of the year.

The IMOCA VIRTUAL SERIES, the same emotions in virtual

In parallel to this unique circuit, Virtual Regatta innovates by proposing the IMOCA VIRTUAL SERIES, the first virtual Championship of its kind. In addition to the real races, Virtual Regatta will complete the programme with nearly ten 100% virtual races that will be created for the occasion.

Like any real skipper, each virtual skipper will accumulate points throughout the season to win the annual title. This is also a way of strengthening the link with the IMOCA class, as the best performers will win prizes, in particular the opportunity for the champion to sail aboard a real IMOCA boat: CORUM L’Épargne, skippered by Nicolas Troussel.

How it works?

In each event, each skipper scores a number of points according to his or her ranking, the number of participants and a coefficient specific to each event.

Example: if 10 boats start a race with a coefficient of 4, the first boat scores 10 x 4 = 40 points, the second boat scores 9 x 4 = 36 points, etc.

The skipper or skippers who have scored the most points over the season win the title.

They said it!

“Over the years, we have seen how Virtual Regatta has succeeded in bringing together an ever-growing community that is enthusiastic about taking on the same challenges as the IMOCA skippers. Their passion and commitment are essential factors in the popularity of our races. In parallel to the development and influence of the IMOCA GLOBE SERIES, the creation of the IMOCA VIRTUAL SERIES is a great opportunity to contribute to the loyalty of this community and to experience great moments of sport together. It also highlights the importance of our championship and its influence, both in real and virtual terms. I would like to warmly thank Virtual Regatta and CORUM L’Épargne for their trust and their commitment to us.”
