Story of the Week #15
Pasquale Paoli's ‘Galleotta’

Friday July 21th 2023

Pasquale Paoli's ‘galleotta’ refers to a small boat used by Pasquale Paoli during the Corsican war of resistance against Genoese and French forces in the 18th century.

The galleotta was a small Corsican warship, often used for reconnaissance operations, surprise attacks and coastal skirmishes.

This type of boat was agile, fast and easy to handle, making it an ideal choice for the guerrilla tactics used by Corsican forces.

Pasquale Paoli, as leader of the Corsican resistance, used the galleotta to carry out naval operations against the Genoese and French forces seeking to suppress the Corsican rebellion.

The galleottes were often armed with cannons and small crews of determined Corsican fighters.

The use of the galleotta and other privateer warships enabled Paoli's forces to harass enemy forces, disrupt their lines of communication and conduct raids along the Corsican coast.

This gave a tactical advantage to the Corsican resistance, which was often outnumbered and outgunned.

Pasquale Paoli's galleotta has become emblematic of Corsican resistance and the island's fight for independence. It symbolises the determination and tenacity of the Corsicans in their fight for freedom and autonomy.
