Australia via Amsterdam

Par Many Players - December 10 2012

Circumnavigators all know: you have to pass Amsterdam to get to Australia! Of course, this is, Amsterdam Island, a tiny island at 37°50 South and 77°31 North, after which the third ice gate has been named.

A less disruptive gate than Crozet, it still requires some important decisions because decisions made here will affect a skipper’s passage towards Australia.

Wedged between cyclone Claudia and a big depression coming from the south, the bulk of the fleet will have to deal with a complicated weather system over the coming days.

For now, most skippers in the South have once again taken advantage with Meteo79niort.com closely shadowed by OG287 and stakk GD taking a really deep southern route. The armada of 40°40 is lead by the trio of ptitclairTEVTPN, cokdenoa and Tinifon but many "big fish", such as cofreno, ricard_34, loulousfamily15 or sunburnn are still there stalking both groups and we can expect them to be there or thereabouts come the end.

Finally, further north and coming back in the race after a remarkable journey are llyl, nollier, petite chloe 10 and oldpassor PK. All have apparently chosen the eastern end of the gate and they already have their eye on Australia.
